Happy Elvis Day 2011

As you probably know, today would have been Elvis Presley’s 76th birthday. Do you do anything special to celebrate Elvis Day? When I was in high school, I made it a point to watch That’s The Way It Is and the ’68 Comeback Special on VHS. Sometimes, I threw in One Night With You and Aloha From Hawaii if I had enough time.

Though I will sometimes pull out a DVD or two, these days I usually just try to fit in as much Elvis listening as possible. For instance, I’ve had my iPod set to play all Elvis all the time since Thursday. [Now playing is “Love Me” from the August 12, 1970, Midnight Show, on That’s The Way It Is (2000 Special Edition).]

Twenty-four years from now, it will be the 100th anniversary of Elvis’ birth. If I am fortunate enough to still be on this Earth and relatively healthy by then, I plan to spend January 8, 2035, in Tupelo, Mississippi. I can’t think of a better place to be on that day. By then, I will be approaching 60 years old, while The Mystery Train Elvis Blog will be approaching post #3,000. I’m not sure which of those numbers scares me more.

Wherever you happen to be this year, and however you choose to celebrate, I hope you enjoy Elvis Day 2011.

  1. On the Kings birthday, I too try and watch at least Aloha and On Tour, as well as what movies they may play to celebrate. Have also been watching each year Home shopping networks tribute to Elvis. Being as I was born Jan. 5th I always felt even closer to Elvis. But on a sad note, This is the day my dear mother passed away 2005, we where going to watch Elvis movies at the hospital. How ironic. But I will celebrate her and Elvis on his special day as always! So to all Elvis fans, wear your Elvis garb, play his songs, watch his concerts, and celebrate The King and his legacy on this special day!! TCB forever!!

  2. If not sooner, I’ll see you in Tupelo on January 8, 2035, Ty. Until then I’ll enjoy your posts, right up to number 3,000. Have a great Elvis Day 2011!

    • Yes, definitely see you in Tupelo! We’ll have to have an “Old Elvis writers convention” and we can tell all the kids there how tough it used to be for us writers back in the day. “And we had to type out our thoughts, using keyboards.” “The horror!”

If my math is correct, only 2,904 posts to go… but then, I’m a writer, not a mathematician!

  4. Ty,

I am ecstatic about running across your blog! I’ve spent the past few days reading the backlog. Why it never dawned on me to Google “Elvis blogs” I’ll never know :)
Thank you so much for your wonderful blog. My husband is also very understanding when it comes to my Elvis habits, and our 4 year old son is becoming an Elvis fan as well – have to raise him right!
    Happy New Year!
