The Mystery Train is a site where I delve into Elvis Presley as an entertainer, including his work as a recording artist, live performer, and movie actor. In the context of his artistry, I also concentrate on the humanity of Elvis rather than his frozen-in-time image. While I have fun, I approach his work with seriousness, curiosity, and respect; his life with compassion.

You’ll discover that most of my articles focus on Elvis’ music, some on his movies, and a few on his television appearances. His personal life usually comes into play only when it meaningfully intersects with his body of work as an artist.

Though I occasionally cover news here, especially when relevant to the above framework, this is not a news site. I’ll certainly mention new music or documentary releases of interest to me.

I don’t focus on Elvis’ stage attire, cataloging costumes, or tracking the latest Elvis-branded merchandise and trinkets.

The Mystery Train covers the real Elvis Presley, not tribute artists. I also do not cover conspiracy theories and other tabloid rumors.

Elvis was as imperfect as any of us, so do not mistake The Mystery Train as a shrine. I obsess over aspects of his career, but I do not worship Elvis. I believe in fair and honest criticism of his work. I also recognize that my opinions are not the final word on Elvis Presley.

Whether you prefer long or short reads, you will find a variety of them here. Some of my pieces are brief observations, while others are deep-dives into subjects I find fascinating.

When I think about Elvis, I picture the polished performer of Elvis: That’s The Way It Is or the raw energy of the 1968 ELVIS special. You’ll find I revisit the magical 1968-1970 timeframe often.

There is something about his 1970s work, up to and including the Graceland sessions, that really speaks to me. I do not and will not dismiss it.

Exploring genres beyond rock ’n’ roll does not mean Elvis stopped having anything relevant to say. Not every song has to be groundbreaking to have meaning, whether I’m talking about 1973 or 1960.
