Part III: Storming The Mountain

On Monday, July 5, 1954, at Sun Studio in Memphis, producer Sam Phillips gives young Elvis Presley, a truck driver for Crown Electric, a chance to prove himself. Nothing clicks until Elvis and bassist Bill Black start having fun with a blues song by Arthur “Big Boy” Crudup. Guitarist Scotty Moore soon joins in. . . .

Elvis had actually made his first recording about a year earlier, an informal demonstration record at Phillips’ Memphis Recording Service, located within Sun Studio, as a surprise for his mother.

Elvis: “I started out when I was just out of high school. I was driving a truck, and I was training to be an electrician, and I got wired the wrong way, baby. That’s what happened to me. . . . One day on my lunch break I went into a . . . record company to make a record for my own use. I really wasn’t trying to get into the business.”Q

Elvis: “I made the record. In fact, we’ve still got the record at home. It’s so thin, you can’t play it now. The record I made was ‘My Happiness’ and one of the Ink Spots’ numbers. . . . I had a little $20 guitar. It sounded like somebody beating on a bucket lid or something.”R

Marion Keisker, who worked at Memphis Recording Service, made a note of the singer who paid to record the My Happiness/That’s When Your Heartaches Begin acetate, but nothing came of it at first. Elvis came back a few months later and recorded another acetate demo, apparently hoping to get Phillips’ attention. His persistence eventually paid off in the formal session that resulted in “That’s All Right.”

Impressed by the singer’s take on “That’s All Right,” Phillips signs Elvis to the Sun label about a week later. Elvis’ first single, That’s All Right/Blue Moon Of Kentucky, becomes a regional hit, slowly spreading from Memphis.

Elvis: “My very first appearance after I started recording, I was on a show in Memphis . . . as an extra added singer, a big jamboree in an outdoor theater, outdoor auditorium.

“I came out on stage, and I was scared stiff. It was my first big appearance in front of an audience. I came out, and I was doing a fast-type tune, one of my first records. Everybody was hollering, and I didn’t know what they were hollering at.

“Everybody was screaming and everything, and then I came off stage and my manager told me that they was hollering because I was wiggling my legs. I was unaware of what I was doing. Bob Neal was my manager.

“And so I went back out for an encore and kinda did a little more, and the more I did, the wilder they went.”S

A few weeks later, Elvis is back at Sun Studio experimenting. He records a haunting version of “Blue Moon,” but Phillips decides against releasing it. The recording eventually shows up in 1956 on his debut album, Elvis Presley.

Elvis: “My daddy had seen a lot of people who played the guitar and stuff who didn’t work, so he said, ‘Make up your mind about either being an electrician or playing the guitar. I never saw a guitar player that was worth a damn!'”T

By late 1954, even Billboard is taking notice of Elvis with a positive review of his third single, Milkcow Blues Boogie/You’re A Heartbreaker. Music promoter “Colonel” Tom Parker, currently managing Hank Snow, also starts paying attention around this time and slowly begins working his way into the singer’s life.

I don’t know that Elvis ever quite achieved another performance like his studio version of “Mystery Train” in terms of mood. I’m hard-pressed to think of one. Maybe the studio version of “Are You Lonesome Tonight,” which, of course is a whole different genre. Or “Blue Moon,” mentioned earlier. In any event, there’s something dark and contemplative about the 1955 “Mystery Train” that I love to my core.

Over time, Parker lures Elvis away from Phillips and Sun Records by orchestrating a lucrative deal with RCA Records. Under Parker’s deal, Phillips sells Elvis’ recording contract and tapes to RCA Records in November 1955 for $35,000 (over $400,000 in 2025).

In January 1956, Elvis records in RCA’s Nashville studio for the first time.

In March, Parker officially becomes Elvis’ manager. Around this time, Parker also parts ways with Snow. Parker eventually commands a 50% fee from Elvis, his sole client. Among other deals, Parker begins shopping Elvis around to the major movie studios.

Elvis: “I’ve had people ask me was I gonna sing in the movies. I’m not, I mean as far as I know, because I took strictly an acting test, and I wouldn’t care too much about singing in the movies.”U

“I Want You, I Need You, I Love You” becomes Elvis’ second number one hit.

In the first six months of 1956, Elvis appears on national television eight times, with six appearances on Jackie Gleason’s Stage Show (CBS), hosted by the Dorsey Brothers, and two appearances on the Milton Berle Show (NBC).

Elvis: “It happened very fast to all of us–my mother, my father and all of us. Everything happened overnight and so we had to adjust to a lot of things very quickly. A lot of good things, I might say.”V

Elvis’ June appearance on the Milton Berle Show includes a wild performance of “Hound Dog,” which he has not yet formally recorded.

Elvis: “At that particular time, there was a lot of controversy. You didn’t see people moving out in public. They were getting it on in the back rooms, but you didn’t see it out in public too much.”W

It was really a toss-up for me to include Elvis’ live version of “Hound Dog” from the Berle show versus his studio master. I eventually went with the studio version because of its iconic status, but it’s another track that I could just as easily swap out next week.

On July 1, Elvis appears on the Steve Allen Show (NBC) and sings “Hound Dog” again. This performance is more subdued, but only adds to the legend.

Elvis: “They were going to tame me down, so they had me dressed in a tuxedo, had me singing to a dog on a stool.”X

Later in the evening, after the Steve Allen Show, a weary Elvis appears on a New York NBC affiliate’s Hy Gardner Calling interview program and is asked to address the controversy surrounding his music:

Elvis: “I don’t see that any type of a music would have any bad influence on people, when it’s only a music, I mean. I can’t figure it out. In a lot of the papers, they say rock ‘n’ roll is a big influence on juvenile delinquency. I don’t think that it is. . . . I don’t see how music would have anything to do with it at all.”Y

The next day, Elvis steps into RCA’s New York studio and records one of the biggest singles of his career.

Both sides of Don’t Be Cruel/Hound Dog become number one hits as controversy continues to follow the singer.

Elvis: “The police filmed the show one time in Florida because the PTA, the YMCA, or somebody, they thought I was something. They said, ‘Man, he’s gotta be crazy.’ So, the police came out, and they filmed the show. So, I couldn’t move. I had to stand still. The only thing I’d move was my little finger, like that.”Z

Meanwhile, the movie deal that has been percolating for some time comes to fruition.

Elvis: “My next move was Hollywood. That’s how it happens: You get a record, and you get on television, then you go to Hollywood. I wasn’t ready for that town, and they wadn’t15 ready for me.”AA

Elvis’ first movie, The Reno Brothers, goes into production in August.

Despite Elvis’ early belief to the contrary, there was no way the movie studios were going to feature the chart-topping star solely as an actor. That same month, he records the soundtrack to The Reno Brothers: Three awful songs that The Elvis Odyssey will skip and one with new lyrics set to the traditional tune of “Aura Lee.”

“Love Me Tender” becomes another number one hit for Elvis, with sales so strong that The Reno Brothers is renamed Love Me Tender prior to the film’s release. As for the film itself, Elvis is not happy with how it turns out.

Elvis: “They wanted to put me in a movie real quick. Love Me Tender, the first one, almost finished me off in the business. Well, it almost killed me. It was a rush deal. They rushed me in the thing just to get my name. . . . So, they did, and the picture wasn’t all that good of a picture. It was an old picture, I mean story-wise, and I shouldn’t have been in it from the beginning. And I started trying to act in it. I was trying to act in it, and the minute you start trying to act on the screen, you’re dead.”AA1

Though not released as a single, “Love Me” climbs to #2 on the charts on the strength of radio airplay and sales of the Elvis Vol. 1 Extended Play (EP) on which it features.

Elvis: “Then I went to the Ed Sullivan Show. . . . They photographed me from the waist up. And Sullivan’s standing over there saying, ‘Sumbitch.’ So, I said, ‘Thank you, Ed, thank you.’ I didn’t know what he was calling me at the time. . . . I did the Sullivan Show two or three times.”AB

On his third and final Ed Sullivan Show (CBS) appearance, television cameras show Elvis only from the waist up. Once again, an attempt to undermine the controversial singer only adds to his legend.

“Don’t Be Cruel” from that January 1957 Sullivan appearance is one of my favorite live recordings of that song. Though I defaulted to the 1956 studio master for this iteration of The Elvis Odyssey, this 1957 version, inspired by Jackie Wilson’s Las Vegas imitation of Elvis that the latter happened to see, is just as strong.

I consider “One Night” to be one of the greatest of all Elvis songs, so it’s funny to see that it peaked at “only” number four. This is partially explained by the fact that, though recorded in 1957, it wasn’t actually released until Elvis was months into his U.S. Army service in late 1958. It could also just be my taste differs from typical listeners of 1958.

This fine 1957 recording of “When It Rains, It Really Pours” was held back even longer than “One Night,” not escaping from the vaults until it became an album cut in 1965. Elvis had also tried out the same song while at Sun in 1955. That early recording did not see the light of day until 1983.

After struggling to find privacy for him and his parents at various residences, Elvis buys a 1939 home in Memphis, called “Graceland” by its former owners, in March 1957 for $102,500 (over $1 million in 2025). He then spends another $500,000 renovating it (over $6 million in 2025). The property includes over 13 acres.

Shortly after his mother’s death, Elvis is transferred to Germany, where he will spend the remaining 18 months of his military service.

Elvis: “At first, in the service, the guys just watched me to see what I was gonna do. . . . They saw I was doing the same thing that they were. They started to come around and talk, and everything went okay.

“I’ve had people ask me was it harder on me or was it easier or so forth. It was about the same. They didn’t make it any harder or any easier on me. I was just like everybody else.”AE

While his manager and record label do a good job of issuing singles from vault material while he is serving in the Army, Elvis returns from his two years of military service in March 1960 and almost immediately goes into the Nashville studio to close the nine-month gap since his last single release. He also records a new album. The sessions are his first in true stereo.

With a solid album, several successful singles, and a brief television appearance on The Frank Sinatra-Timex Show (ABC) under his belt, Elvis is back in Hollywood and in uniform for the comedy G.I. Blues.

Compared to his other top-notch 1960 albums, Elvis Is Back! and His Hand In Mine, the G.I. Blues soundtrack is a mixed bag of often mediocre or worse material. It is also the biggest seller of the three, proving Parker’s concept that the soundtracks would promote the movies while the movies would promote the soundtracks. It sets an unfortunate precedent that will recur multiple times in the 1960s.

Don Siegel (Invasion of the Body Snatchers [1956], Dirty Harry [1971]) directs Elvis in his second movie of 1960, Flaming Star. The western, which includes minimal singing, features Elvis as a half-Native American, half-white character. Compared to G.I. Blues, the drama finds only moderate success at the box office.

In 1963, artist Andy Warhol would make a series of popular works based on a publicity still from Flaming Star, including Triple Elvis.

14While my posts for The Elvis Odyssey primarily look at the pop charts, an RCA reissue of “I Forgot To Remember To Forget” actually hit number one on the country & western charts prior to the success of “Heartbreak Hotel.”

I should also note that the (perhaps dubious) source I am using primarily for chart information is the 1987 double LP The Top Ten Hits, which is largely for nostalgic reasons. Though not made clear, I believe this album uses a combination of Billboard pop charts for its reference tables on the back cover.

If other charts are considered, such as Cashbox, Elvis’ hit total expands even further. However, I’m choosing to draw the line with The Top Ten Hits because it was a favorite of my teen years.↩︎

Vinyl Elvis #3: HIS HAND IN MINE (1960)

1960 was Elvis Presley’s most productive year to that point in his career. He recorded 52 studio masters, released 3 albums, and filmed 3 movies; and all that with being out of commission for almost the entire first 3 months while completing his stint in the U.S. Army.

For the 25-year-old singer, the albums Elvis Is Back! and His Hand In Mine represented artistic achievements on par with his outstanding work in the previous decade. The latter title was his first Long Play (LP) sacred album, a follow-up of sorts to his 1957 Extended Play (EP) sacred album Peace In The Valley.

Elvis recorded the entire His Hand In Mine album the night of October 30, finishing in the early morning hours of October 31, 1960. Amazingly, the record was in stores within a month – presumably rushed to have it ready for the Christmas season. RCA released His Hand In Mine in both mono and stereo formats.

As a second generation Elvis fan, I first heard His Hand In Mine in the early 1990s on CD. As with so many Elvis albums, I have bought it a number of times in different CD configurations over the years since then. When Kees asked me to review the album for its 60th anniversary back in 2020, I sought out a vinyl version – a first pressing of the 1960 mono release.

One of the things I enjoy about collecting used records is pondering their history. I imagine a young Elvis fan in 1960 buying this album at her or his local record shop and taking it home to play it for the first time. What else is happening in November 1960?

How many others owned this particular copy of His Hand In Mine before it made its way into my hands 60 years later? Whose hands will hold it 60 years from now?

The album is in remarkable condition for its age. The outer sleeve, featuring a photo of Elvis at the piano, taken during a break while filming Flaming Star, is still vibrant. Only a small tear beneath the RCA logo on the front cover, where a fan was perhaps too aggressive in removing a price tag, and minor splitting in the bottom seam betray its age. The inner sleeve, promoting Elvis Is Back!, is in great shape. On the vinyl itself, there are but a few little crackles in quiet portions. Whether this is an indication that the original owner(s) did not play this album very often or simply treated it with reverence, there is no way to know.

When I first heard His Hand In Mine nearly 30 years ago, I believed in God but had little understanding of Christianity. While I thought Elvis’ voice sounded beautiful on many of the songs, I really did not connect with them beyond that. I did occasionally play this or one of his other sacred albums on a random Sunday, seeking something.

In 2018, I accepted Jesus into my heart, and I was literally reborn (2 Corinthians 5:17). While I still stumble every day, I now have a personal relationship with Jesus through daily reading of the Bible and prayer that helps me get back on track to becoming who He created me to be.

As for Elvis’ sacred recordings, they began to take on new meaning for me. It is within this context that I want to examine His Hand In Mine.

    The album kicks off with the title track, “His Hand In Mine.” Elvis’ voice is full of new confidence and strength on this slow number – as compared to 1956’s more faltering “Love Me Tender,” for instance.
  2. I’m Gonna Walk Dem Golden Stairs
    Up next, the pace picks up with “I’m Gonna Walk Dem Golden Stairs.” This song sounds like Elvis fulfilling his dream of being in a gospel quartet. The line “When Jesus says to me, ‘Well done'” recalls the following verse from the Bible: “His lord said unto him, ‘Well done, thou good and faithful servant: thou hast been faithful over a few things, I will make thee ruler over many things: enter thou into the joy of thy lord'” (Matthew 25:21 KJV). As a Christian, I do not fear death, as I know it is when I will go to meet Jesus. I pray I will live the rest of my life such that He will say, “Well done.”
  3. In My Father’s House
    There is an even more direct Scriptural reference in the next song, “In My Father’s House.” Elvis sings, “In my Father’s house are many mansions; if it were not true He would have told me so.” In the Bible, Jesus states: “In My Father’s house are many mansions: if it were not so, I would have told you. I go to prepare a place for you” (John 14:2 KJV). Elvis’ vocals are exquisite on lines like, “Jesus died upon the cross to bear my sorrow. Freely died that souls like you might have new life.” A highlight of the album.

  5. Known Only To Him
    “Known Only To Him” is an interesting 1960 recording by Elvis because it is one of those where portions sound like his later voice from the 1970s. His inspirational and Christmas songs do tend to blend together better across the decades, though, compared to many of his other recordings. It would have been interesting to hear Elvis take another try at this song in 1970 or 1971, even if live. I don’t think he would have been able to better this version, though.

  1. Joshua Fit The Battle
    My first complete read-through of the Bible in 2018 had a secondary and unexpected benefit of filling in details for me on a number of songs. For instance, in the upbeat “Joshua Fit The Battle,” I had always heard the lyrics as, “I know you’ve heard about Joshua, he was the son of none.” Yes, for 25 years I thought Joshua was an orphan until I finally learned that his father’s name was Nun. The song recounts the battle of Jericho, which is featured in chapter 6 of Joshua in the Old Testament. In his later years, Joshua was one of only two adults from Moses’ original followers to make it to the Promised Land.
  2. Jesus Knows What I Need
    “Jesus Knows What I Need” is one of those songs that speaks Truth whenever I need comfort. I can imagine Elvis singing this one around the piano with friends. A bit of trivia: In subsequent pressings of His Hand In Mine, this song’s title was corrected to “He Knows Just What I Need.”
  3. Swing Down Sweet Chariot
    The humorous “Swing Down Sweet Chariot” takes us back to the Old Testament. Called “Zeke” in the song, the prophet Ezekiel’s encounter with the chariot of God is described in chapter 1 of Ezekiel. Though I love this song, I much prefer the alternate version of Elvis’ 1968 re-recording that features the Blossoms as the backing vocalists.
  4. Mansion Over The Hilltop
    Like “In My Father’s House” on Side 1, “Mansion Over the Hilltop” and “If We Never Meet Again” on Side 2 provide beautiful illustrations of the Perfect Place, Heaven. In “Mansion,” a favorite line is, “Someday yonder we will never more wander, but walk on streets that are pure as gold.” I just love the sound of Elvis’ voice as he paints this picture.
  5. If We Never Meet Again
    Elvis’ mother, Gladys, passed away in August 1958 at the age of 46, and I’m sure Elvis had her in mind while recording “If We Never Meet Again,” which states: “If we never meet again this side of Heaven, as we struggle through this world and its strife, there’s another meeting place somewhere in Heaven, by the side of the River of Life – where the charming roses bloom forever and ever, and separations come no more.” The “River of Life” is from Revelation 22:1 in the Bible, which describes God’s throne in Heaven. Elvis was only 23 when he lost his mother. At a September 1958 press conference before leaving to be stationed in Germany until his return to the U.S. and civilian life in March 1960, he had this to say about her, captured on the Elvis Sails EP: “My mother, I suppose since I was an only child, that we might have been a little closer. Everyone loves their mother, but I was an only child, and Mother was always right with me, all my life. It wasn’t only like losing a mother, it was like losing a friend, a companion, someone to talk to. I could wake her up any hour of the night, and if I was worried or troubled about something, she’d get up and try to help me.”
  6. Working On The Building
    I first heard the energetic “Working On The Building” on the 1988 album Elvis In Nashville and loved it right away. Take 2, released on the 2006 FTD edition of His Hand In Mine, is also a favorite. In the gospel segment of the 1968 ELVIS television special, wheelbarrows can be seen as part of the set decoration – reminding me of this 1960 song, which was unfortunately not performed on the show. “I’m working on the building, it’s a true foundation,” sings Elvis. In Matthew 7:24-27, Jesus talks about the importance of building a strong spiritual foundation. “Working On The Building” serves as a perfect conclusion to His Hand In Mine.

I enjoy looking at album covers while playing records. His Hand In Mine includes liner notes on the back by Robert Kotlowitz. He explores Elvis’ early faith through attending the First Assembly Church of God in Tupelo, Mississippi.

An interesting tidbit in the liner notes, which I do not recall reading elsewhere, is, “Gladys and Vernon Presley, with their small son [Elvis] standing between them, became a popular trio singing hymns at camp meetings, revivals and church conventions.” Truth or legend?

The liner notes also include a quote from Elvis’ mother: “When Elvis was just a little fellow, he would slide off my lap, run down the aisle, and scramble up to the platform of the church. He would stand looking up at the choir and try to sing with them. He was too little to know the words, of course, but he could carry the tune.”

Except for a quick session in June 1958, which was a couple of months before his mother’s death, Elvis made no formal recordings while serving in the Army. While Elvis Is Back! and the G.I. Blues soundtrack afforded no such opportunities, I firmly believe His Hand In Mine is a “labor of love” by Elvis in tribute not only to Jesus but, as Kotlowitz states, to Gladys Presley.

Elvis Is Back! Legacy Edition coming in March

The Second Disc yesterday posted a write-up and track listing for the forthcoming Sony Legacy Edition of Elvis Is Back! (“‘Elvis is Back’ is back” — The Second Disc). The Legacy Edition is a 2-CD set containing the LP albums Elvis Is Back! (1960) and Something For Everybody (1961). Also included are the associated singles from those albums. Singles were often left off of Elvis’ main LP releases during that time because they were saved instead for the Golden Records compilation LP series.

Recorded just after his return from the Army, Elvis Is Back! represents one of Elvis’ all-time greatest albums. I haven’t covered the Elvis Is Back! Legacy Edition here until now because both featured albums have already received separate two-CD deluxe set treatments on Sony’s Follow That Dream Elvis collectors label.

The FTD editions contained tons of alternate takes and the like in addition to the master takes, while the Legacy Edition sticks only to the master takes. Hardcore fans will want the FTD releases instead, but the Sony Legacy edition looks to be perfect for more mainstream fans, or perhaps those who are just starting to explore Elvis’ catalog beyond the typical greatest hits collections.

Previous Legacy Edition releases for Elvis were From Elvis In Memphis (coupled with Back In Memphis) and On Stage-February 1970 (coupled with Elvis In Person). Elvis Is Back! Legacy Edition (coupled with Something For Everybody) hits stores on March 1.

A refreshing portrait of Elvis after the Army [The Film Frontier blog]

I run across cool stuff every now and then that I just want to point out to you. Peter Guralnick’s Last Train To Memphis: The Rise of Elvis Presley represents the definitive account of Elvis’ early years. Though many herald it along with Last Train, his follow-up volume, Careless Love: The Unmaking of Elvis Presley, often leaves something to be desired.

Guralnick at least treats his subject with a sympathetic eye, which is better than most Elvis biographers, but his disdain for much of Elvis’ post-Army career is still evident. As someone who happens to love and enjoy this later Elvis, I do not like to see those years so easily dismissed. The great thing is, someone else has already said all of this far better than I ever could.

Drjohncarpenter over on the For Elvis CD Collectors message board recommended “Elvis In The Dark” by Daniel Wolff. It contains a critical look not only at the post-Army Elvis, but also at Guralnick’s biography. Wolff is the author of a Sam Cooke biography as well as a couple of volumes on Bruce Springsteen. After reading this piece, one of the best I have ever seen about Elvis, my hope is that Wolff will write a Presley biography some day as well.

There was a sad announcement this week in the Elvis world. Sylvia Shemwell recently passed away. She was a member of the Sweet Inspirations, the vocal group that backed Elvis on stage from his return to live performances in 1969 through his death in 1977.

Before becoming part of Elvis’ show, the Sweet Inspirations were already a Grammy-winning gospel group that once backed Aretha Franklin. Outside of their time with Elvis, their best known hit was “Sweet Inspiration,” released in 1968.

Sylvia appears with Elvis in the documentary movies That’s The Way It Is (1970) and Elvis On Tour (1972). She also appears with him in the television specials Aloha From Hawaii (1973) and Elvis In Concert (1977) as well as countless live concert albums.

As for the official Elvis site, as far as I could find, there was no mention of her in their news section. They did, however, find the time to promote a so-called Elvis “Tribute” Artist competition.

My thoughts and prayers are with her family and friends during this time. Sylvia: Thank you for the music.

Myrna Smith, another member of the Sweet Inspirations who backed Elvis during the same time and events, was recently hospitalized in Great Britain. It sounds like she is doing better, though, and will hopefully be released soon.

John Wilkinson played rhythm guitar for Elvis in the 1969 through 1977 era, again appearing in those same events. Wilkinson is battling cancer and was recently hospitalized in Missouri.

I was thinking the other day, because of Elvis, I have been listening to these people for pretty much my entire life. I wish all of them well.
